Time Travel Paradoxes - 4 Paradox of Time Travel That will Bend Your Mind
If one day we discover that traveling through time is as easy as moving left and right, forward and backward or up and down, then what ramifications would this have for our temporal existence?

At present, we live, we reproduce and we die. But if time travel were possible how might this sequence become jumbled?

Would there be any strange complications?

What are the paradoxes of time travel?


1. The Grandfather Paradox


Grandfather Paradox


The most commonly cited paradox involving time travel describes how you could erase yourself from existence by going back and killing your own grandfather. By doing this, you would remove the possibility of your even being born. But if that's the case, then, who came back to kill your grandpa? If you don't exist, you could never have traveled back in time. So, your grandpa must therefore live and go back to have a child who in turn produces you and we're back to the paradox once more.

Strangely, this paradox is solvable using nothing more than the original premise itself. Because cause and effect govern our universe. Any action you take in the past would have an impact on the timeline of the future from the very nanosecond you arrived. You would begin to affect your destiny in ways you could not control. Move a single atom one nanometer and you could change the course of Earth's history. Therefore, the moment you arrived in the past ready to settle your beef with Grandpa. You'd be instantly erased before you'd stepped out of your time machine. Let alone pulled the trigger.

Time-travel would basically reset the clock of reality to whichever point you travel to and this would happen every single time you went back.

2. Memories




If you successfully managed to travel back through time, would you even know what you've done?

Let's say you're an average person with an average family, an average job and an average grasp on history. Right now, you can probably remember raising your kids and your first day at work. But what all of these memories be erased as soon as you arrived in the past?

These memories were created in a certain timeline. Our timeline, they did not occur in the timeline you now inhabit. So, is it even possible for these memories to travel through time with you and exists in the past? Or as your mind just had the factory reset button pushed? Alternatively, if your memories have endured a trip backward through time, then, surely you can use them to change your future. With your knowledge of the future, you can now make alterations to the way things panned out. Hate your kids? Just avoid ever meeting your partner or simply try for kids on a different day when a whole new set of sperms are competing for a shot at life. And your former children are left to die on a piece of dried-up tissue.

Solving this paradox is even weirder than the last one because if you can go backward in time and use the knowledge from the future to inform the past, then, all of human history should be one perfect utopia in the far future when mankind has a solution for every problem at nose-up. We could send this info back to the earliest days of man and prevent every war famine and fidgets spinor that ever came to be. But this creates a paradox similar to the first entry whereby if none of those grotesque things ever occurred, the conditions to enable our future utopia would never have existed either. Thankfully, the solution to this is to be found in yet another paradox, the Bootstrap paradox.

3. The Bootstrap Paradox




The Bootstrap paradox describes a situation where a single object or piece of information is sent back in time only to become trapped in an infinite loop of cause and effect.

Imagine, if you went back 20 years and gave Dr. Dre the idea to charge 200 bucks for 10$ headphones by putting a sticker on them. Well, eventually Dre would steal this idea. Market Beats headphones on his own and earns a few hundred million. But eventually, Dr. Dre's timeline would reach the point where you decided to travel back in time and sell Dre his own idea unless the loop is complete and it goes on forever.

Who can truly be said to have invented Beats? Was it you? Was it Dre? Was it someone else?

The idea of Beats headphones can, therefore, be said to exist within an infinite loop with their origin unable to be proven. An even more incredible version of the bootstrap paradox can be found in the Robert Heinlein short story "All You Zombies". In this tale, an intersex male who is born as a female is deceived into going back in time to impregnate herself. As a result, that person could then be said to have no mother or father and no children either. This person is now a self-replicating being which exists within its own causal loop. And the reason this paradox seemingly solves the previous one is that such loops break off from traditional timelines existing in a loop reality of their very own.

If you're still confused, imagine, the analogy of a toy racetrack being built by a child. The child decides to build a normal track which is never-ending adding a new piece every day to allow the cars to continue moving. This is your normal timeline. However, one day he sends a car back to an earlier part of the track. When he does this, he creates a new path and the car heads off in a new direction. But as soon as this happens, the track behind it disappears preventing the car from returning to the original track. The car now exists on a looped track from which it cannot escape.

So, yeah, the solution to the time travel paradox is basically a NASCAR race.

4. The Multiverse Paradox




One thing we've not yet discussed of time travel paradoxes is the existence of the multiverse. If an infinite or large number of parallel universes exist, then, how are they affected by time travel?

Well, one theory is that time travel may itself take place between multiple universes rather than traveling back through time within your own universe which could be impossible. You would actually be traveling to another universe similar to yours but at a different point in time. This would solve every paradox on the list as since you're now inside an entirely new timeline, you can kill all the grandfathers your heart desires or can you perhaps not. Because if you can time travel between universes and affect the future of another reality, surely, someone can do the same to your reality. At any moment, a time traveler from another universe could land in our timeline and wipe out everything we know today.

Theoretically, this means you could jump from one universe to another meaning that traveling back to your own universe is past would simply be a case of taking a detour through another universe on the way.

An alternative explanation which solves this paradox involves a similar solution to the bootstrap paradox except instead of creating a new loop reality, time travel merely creates another reality branched off from a point in the past. So by putting a bullet in grandpas brain, you're not affecting your own past. You're simply preventing another you from existing in the new universe your actions have just created and maybe that is what the universe wanted you to do all along.

Is it possible that we live in a multiverse?




What is the multiverse and does it even exist?

Some scientists believe that we live in a parallel universe that is closely related to our known observable universe. But this isn't just a wild idea that someone thought up. There is some science behind this idea. And while some physicists disregard the idea that a multiverse exists, there are others who believe that it is possible that we live in a parallel universe.

The idea that we live in a parallel universe isn't something that was created in a science-fiction movie as some might think. In 1954, a Princeton University grad student by the name of Hugh Everett came up with the idea that quantum effects caused the universe to constantly split. What this means is that everything you do and each action that you take creates new universes each one having a different set of circumstances and outcomes.
For example, let's say that you come to a crossroad where you can go either right or left. The present universe would give rise to two other universes where in one you decided to go left and in the other, you decided to go right. Evert developed the idea for his Ph.D. thesis and the theory held up. And according to his work, we are all living in a multiverse of countless universes with full copies of each one of us.



But the leading physicists of Everett's day, in particular, Niels Bohr, one of the fathers of quantum mechanics, couldn't stomach the idea that every decision we make creates new universes one for all possible outcomes. Evert ended up leaving physics and joined the Pentagon. His main job was to calculate how to maximize the death toll for the Soviets while minimizing it for the Americans by looking at the fallout. He ended up writing the first serious report on the devastating effects of nuclear war. It helped devise the concept of what is known as Mutually Assured Destruction or M.A.D. The acronym that appropriately sums up the insanity of starting a nuclear war.

What is interesting about this is that if Everett firmly believed in a multiverse, his actions help describe the horrors of nuclear war in this universe and this reduced the fraction of the multiverse that saw global nuclear war. It's tempting to speculate that these actions were influenced by his physics work but we'll never know.
The idea that a multiverse exists at all started with the Big Bang, an unknown trigger that caused the singularity to expand and inflate in three-dimensional space. As the immense energy of this expansion cooled, the light began to shine through because the observable universe extends only as far as light has had a chance to travel in 13.7 billion years. The space-time beyond that distance can be considered to be in its own separate universe. A multitude of universes could exist next to each other like a giant patchwork quilt. Space-time may stretch out to infinity and if so our universe is bound to repeat itself at some point.



The multiverse cannot be proven and it cannot be disproven either. However, if it does exist then, there could be thousands of copies of yourself, each one being different in some way or another. If the multiverse does exist, then, your actions would shape the course of not just your life but of the lives of your duplicates and other universes.

The parallel universe idea comes from the strength theory, in which there are universes just like ours that exist just out of reach of our own universe. There is the possibility of many more dimensions to our world than the three of space and one of time that we understand. In this theory, our three-dimensional universe exists in a larger super universe with nine spatial dimensions. The debate between scientists on these theories comes down to whether mathematics can be used as a tool for describing the universe or whether math itself is the fundamental reality. And our observations of the universe are just imperfect perceptions of its true mathematical nature. If the latter is true then perhaps, the particular mathematical structure that makes our universe isn't the only option, and in fact, all possible mathematical structures exist as their own separate universes.

Recently, some evidence was found in space that could possibly point towards the existence of a multiverse. There is a cold spot in space that is 1.8 billion light-years across. This part of space is cooler than the rest of the surrounding space. This supervoid was thought to be cooler because it has less matter in it compared to other comparable sections of space. But now, it's believed that galaxies in this black void are clustered around smaller voids that populate the cold spot like bubbles.



One possible explanation is that the cold spot resulted from a collision between our universe and another universe. It is thought that the energy release of such an impact would have created this cold spot. There isn't solid proof of this yet. But a new map of this part of the universe might help scientists find out if this is the footprint of another universe. If data proves this to be the case, then, the cold spot might be taken as the first evidence for the multiverse and billions of other universes may exist like our own.

Of course, if we are living in a multiverse, then, it wouldn't be so exciting as it might sound. The laws of physics would probably be different on one world and mathematics and quantum physics might not even exist on others. Just as there is an infinite number similar gets slightly different universes, there will also be an infinite number in which the basic laws of physics are different. Everything we think we know might just be applicable to our own world and what a letdown that might be.

The multiverse, while an exciting idea, has its detractors that aren't so exciting. Some scientists feel since it's not something observable or provable that it's pointless and even unscientific to bring it into the discussion. One issue is that in trying to understand our existence and how our universe was created, the ordinary and obvious solutions seemed to come up empty. However, as humans evolve and technology advances, we might end up with solid proof one day. The irony is that if there is a multiverse, scientists will have to accept that the ultimate goal of physics which is to explain why our universe is the way it is, could be through ever out of reach.

What is the true Meaning of Life? 4 Possibilities
The meaning of life is a question many great thinkers have pondered ever since the dawn of original thought. But while we haven't yet found the answer, humanity has come up with some pretty weird explanations for why stuff just seems to exist.

Is life just one big experiment?

Are we the sworn enemy of the universe?

Does the universe care about us and is there even a meaning to life at all?

Let's see if we can figure it out together with our look at the four most insane possibilities for the meaning of life.


1. To be observed


The idea that life has been made to be observed relates to the concept of the simulated universe. And at its heart, it claims that the purpose of life as we know it has been decided by a higher power. But it isn't God.

Some notable academics believe that the world we live in could be one giant virtual reality. If this were true, it would mean that man has been enslaved by either itself or a more advanced being. We could be mentally trapped in a non-physical prison world with no means of escape. And an even more shocking theory suggests that rather than being trapped inside a virtual world, we might be as artificial as the world around us because if consciousness can be created inside a human womb, why can't it be made artificially elsewhere.

Might our minds be completely virtual constructs existing only on some higher power super advanced hard drive? Who knows? But this hypothetical situation does give rise to a question with a pretty awkward answer.

Why create us? For what purpose?

Such a complicated creation as our existence wouldn't have lasted so long unless there was a solid practical use for it. So, is it possible that life has indeed been made to be observed, to be learned from, to provide knowledge?

Think about it. Earth is the ultimate experiment in science, culture, psychology. If you were an advanced entity and you wanted to study the development of life, a virtually constructed version of a planet filled with conscious beings of your own creation would be perfect. The meaning of our lives could be helped another civilization answer a question. We might be the physical embodiment of a late-night Google search.

If we do live inside a simulation, we and every other life form on the planet are nothing more than lab rats being studied in the pursuit of knowledge either that or for entertainment.


2. There isn't one


The problem with the last entry on simulation theory is that it doesn't give meaning to the life which supposedly created our virtual world. 

Let's say, a higher being did create us. What is the point of their existence and if a higher being created them - what is the purpose of our creators' creator and so on and so forth?

It also doesn't answer the question of what life even is. Is life the same as consciousness? Is the meaning of life to exist and think?

Well, no. That doesn't make sense either. Many life-forms are thought to have varying levels of self-awareness but what value does this have to anyone or anything outside of this planet. The only reason we are able to question life at all is that we have the most advanced cognitive abilities of any life-form that we know of.

But if life were so special, would it be so easily destroyed? How can anything on earth have a grand purpose if the whole lot could be incinerated in seconds by an expanding star or killed off by a gamma-ray burst from outer space?

Perhaps, life isn't that important after all. Perhaps, life is just one component of a universe which is entirely indifferent to our presence. If true then that means your life's purpose, your goals, and your achievements are equal to that of yogurt bacteria.


3. To provide order amongst the chaos


Even if you accept that your place in the universe is insignificant, this doesn't mean that you don't matter. In fact, you may be part of a great collective force which is equal to our universe and far from being indifferent to us. There's a chance that we are the universe's sworn enemy.

To explain this theory, we must first look at the second law of thermodynamics. This law states that the total entropy of an isolated system increases over time. To oversimplify, entropy is order eventually becoming chaos. Our universe is one such isolated system, one that's over 14 billion years old. And in entropy case, the longer the universe exists the more it is inclined to fall into a state of disordered chaos.

But in order to balance that out, some people believed that life was created by the universe to provide negentropy or negative entropy. This is because living things tend to prefer a neat and tidy existence utilizing concepts like structure, function, and responsibility. So while entropy sends energy off in all different directions at random, carrying not where it is scattered.

Living things conversely harness energy. We collect it, store it, and use it. Think of the Sun's solar energy for a moment and picture how it radiates out into space with no purpose or final destination in mind. Those photons could traverse the universe and never achieve a single thing until it comes into contact with life. Because when that photon hits a living entity such as a plant or photosynthetic animal that once meaningless, small photon now has a purpose being used to create complex molecules and to recycle matter and energy. This means that humans, leopards, algae, wasps, yogurt bacteria, and indeed all life, it's actually part of a greater collective force used to balance of the universe.

We are matter's antimatter. We are the proton's neutron and the enemy of cosmic chaos. That is our purpose. That is the meaning of life, to tidy up the universe.


4. There isn't one because you will achieve everything


A more satisfying idea regarding the meaning of life is that everyone and everything has a specific purpose. And if you think about this idea biologically and statistically, it kind of rings true.

Everyone on earth can do at least one thing better than anyone else. It may be something important like leading a country or curing a certain type of disease, or it could be insignificant like being the best in the world at rolling your tongue while wearing a sombrero upside down on a roller coaster. While it would be satisfying to discover what you were good at, what makes you unique, and where you're going in life, the idea of a single purpose goes flying out of the window if we can prove the existence of the multiverse.

For how does life have a meaning if there are infinite versions of you, your neighbor, your dog, of everyone and everything. All the things that you could ever possibly achieve have been done, will be done, and are being done right now. In an infinite number of universes, you are an award-winning screenwriter with purple hair. In an infinite number of universes, you are a mass-murderer with a thing for lay elbows.

In an infinite number of universes, all you've ever done is sat at home all day and eat beans, cold from the can. In an infinite number of universes, you are your own ficus tree.

Which of these is your true purpose? Which of these lives has the meaning?

If the multiverse exists then the answer is either all of them or none. And if that's true, it means we can't look to our everyday human experiences for the meaning of life. Your job, personality, and life history would prove irrelevant. The people you love don't matter because you've loved them and others an infinite number of times. The children you've created are insignificant because you've had better and worse kids in other universes. The people you've murdered do not define your life because all across the multiverse, these same people are alive and well living out their own existence.
